The Spanish press continues to cover the launch of the Smart Socks project. Today, our CEO, Jaume Vidal, was interviewed on the Catalan radio station RAC1.

“A company from Catalonia has participated in the creation—pay attention—of smart socks. Yes, socks that can predict when a person with dementia or Alzheimer’s is at risk of falling. These socks measure the patient’s heart rate and sweat levels, and if they detect any anomalies, they alert caregivers via mobile phone. At the moment, they are being tested in a clinical trial taking place in the United Kingdom. To elaborate on this breakthrough—an incredible yet magnificent development—we have Lluc Corominas.”

*”The Catalan company that developed these socks is Unimedia Technology, based in Castelldefels. They have worked hand in hand with the British company Millbotix. The Smart Socks, as they have been named, operate using sensors that, with the help of AI, measure factors such as heart rate, sweat, body temperature, and movement. When any of these parameters become irregular, the system alerts caregivers so they can act in time.

The project’s creators explain that their goal is to prevent stressful situations for people with Alzheimer’s or dementia, which can lead to aggressive behavior, falls, or injuries. The CEO of Unimedia, Jaume Vidal, explains to RAC1 why they decided to apply this technology to socks.”*

“There had been previous attempts using wristbands and other types of devices, but when a person with dementia experiences stress, they tend to rip them off, and ultimately, these devices only end up causing more distress. With socks, this doesn’t happen because they are comfortable, and patients forget they’re even wearing them.”

(Lluc Coromines)

“The project has received funding exceeding €600,000. For now, it is in the clinical trial phase in the United Kingdom, where it is expected to launch on the market first. In Catalonia, they are expected to arrive in 2025.”
